About our masonry contractor business in Yuma

A wide driveway paved with rectangular tan and cream stone pavers curves toward a brown garage, bordered by lush tropical landscaping.

Our story, from new homes to yours

I learned masonry laying block and brick on new homes going up. After years of that, I moved over to fixing and adding onto homes people already live in, and that's what J&L Yuma Concrete and Masonry has done since we started in 2013. The switch taught me how much a wall changes once a family has lived with it, and how much owners want to know what's going on with their own house.

Here in Yuma, most of our calls are about crumbling mortar, a cracked yard wall, or a walkway or retaining wall someone's been putting off. It's hot and dry, with only about 3 inches of rain in a year, so we plan around the heat, because mortar that dries too fast doesn't bond well. I'd rather take extra time explaining why a joint cracked or why a wall needs a good base than leave you guessing, because owners who understand their house make better choices and the work holds up.

What working with us looks like at your house

These are the things you'll notice when we work at your house, from the first walk around the job to the day we pack up and leave.

  • You see the problem before you decide

I come out myself, point to what's going on with your brick, block or stone, and lay out your options in plain words before I write anything up. If you hear me say repointing, that just means cutting out worn mortar and packing in fresh mortar so the joints hold again.

  • Repairs that match what's already there

We match new mortar to the color and texture of the old joints, and new block or stone to the look of the wall it joins, so a repair blends in instead of standing out as a patch. Matching takes extra time up front, and I think it's worth it on a wall you'll look at every day.

  • Walls built from the footing up

Because I know how a wall and its footing, the concrete strip it sits on, go together, we repair and build onto your house with the whole wall in mind. I work right alongside my crew, we keep the work area tidy around your family, and we tell you what's next at each step.

Licensing and permits for masonry work

  • City business license in Yuma

The City of Yuma requires a city business license for any business working inside city limits, including ones based outside the city, and city staff review each application by its location and type of business. It's a fair thing to ask any contractor about before work starts at your house.

  • Licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. When a job needs a permit, we handle the application and set up the inspections with the city or county office, and we tell you what to expect before work starts, since the city wants work inspected before it's covered up.
