What goes into building a brick wall in Yuma?

Brick wall installation in Yuma means laying brick in mortar on a concrete or brick footing set into the ground, so you get a solid garden, privacy or lot-line wall. Built well, clay brick holds its color for years and keeps rain from working through, and the footing always goes in before the first brick is laid.

Most people who call me about a brick wall want privacy, a clean edge along a lot line or something sturdier than a wood fence. The price mostly comes down to how long and tall the wall is, which style we build, how much your yard slopes and what the soil under the footing asks for. The schedule turns on the city's permit review and on getting the footing in and ready before any brick goes up. When the city requires a permit, we handle the application and the inspections for you. I'll walk the job with you and explain what I see before I write up a number, and if what you've really got is an old wall that's cracking, brick repair may be the better place to start.

How do you know it's time for a brick wall?

  • Fence boards warping in sun

Gray, split or curling boards and leaning posts usually mean the sun and dry air have worn the wood out. Every year you patch it, you're paying again for a fence that'll need it again, so it's a good time to price something more permanent.

  • An old wall leaning or split

A lean, or a crack that runs through several rows of brick, usually means the footing under it was too shallow or the ground moved. A wall like that can come down in pieces, so it's worth deciding soon between repairing it and replacing it on a proper base.

  • Nothing between you and the street

If your patio looks straight onto the road or a neighbor's yard, or the dog keeps finding the gap, you're living with the problem a wall solves. Waiting doesn't cost much money, but dust, noise and that open feeling don't go anywhere on their own.

How we handle brick wall installation

I start by walking the wall line with you and talking through which style suits your yard, because a sloped lot can change the answer. Then we mark the layout and dig the footing, the concrete base the brick sits on, down into firm ground that hasn't been dug or filled before, since what's under a brick wall matters as much as the brick. Where the soil calls for it, we set steel reinforcing in the footing before we pour. Once it's ready, we lay the brick in mortar, keep the fresh joints from drying out in the sun, finish the joints neatly, cap the top and clean up the site.

Some walls call for more than brick. If you'd like stone caps, a stone base or a stone face on part of the wall, that's our stone masonry work, and it pairs well with brick. If you already have an older brick wall whose mortar is crumbling, brick pointing replaces the worn mortar so it holds up beside the new wall.

  • Pier-and-panel wall

Thin brick panels run between masonry posts called piers, which brace the wall at intervals. The thinner panels make it an economical wall, and it adapts well to uneven ground, so it's worth pricing if your yard slopes.

  • Solid brick wall

Two layers of brick laid together make a thicker, heavier wall with a finished face on both sides. It suits flat ground and a full privacy wall where you want the look of solid brick from end to end.

What happens after you call about a brick wall in Yuma?

Here's how a brick wall goes from a phone call to a finished wall in your yard, and who you'll be dealing with at each step.

  1. Call or send a message

Call (928) 271-5129 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out. We answer seven days a week, 7 AM to 10 PM.

  2. I walk your yard with you

I come out myself, look at the ground, the slope and where the wall would sit, and explain what I see as we go. Then I write up an estimate, so you know the price before anything gets dug.

  3. We sort out the permit

When the city requires a permit, we file the application and set up the inspections. The city says residential review generally takes 5 work days, so we plan your start date around it.

  4. We build and keep you posted

My crew and I dig and pour the footing, then lay the brick once it's ready. As each stage wraps up, I tell you what comes next, and we leave the site clean.

Why Yuma homeowners call J&L Yuma Concrete and Masonry for brick walls

  • I price it and build it

I come out to look at the job and write the estimate myself, and then I work right alongside my crew when we build it. The person who explained your footing is the one making sure it goes in that way.

  • In business since 2013

We've been in business since 2013, and before that I spent years laying block and brick on new homes. That's a lot of time learning how Yuma's heat and ground treat a wall, and what a footing needs to stand up to them.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured, so you're not taking on the risk of an uninsured crew digging and building in your yard. Ask about it when I come out, and I'll show you.

A brick wall is only as good as what's under it, so the footing is where I'd start the conversation. Send us a few details or call (928) 271-5129, and I'll come take a look.

Permits, subdivision walls and soil for brick walls in Yuma

In Yuma, the city's Building Safety Division issues building permits and generally requires one for new construction. Its list of work that doesn't need a permit names fencing, painting and minor repairs, and brick walls aren't on it, so plan on checking with the city, and we'll handle the application and inspections when one's needed. If your home is in a subdivision, the outer wall along its edge has to be a six-foot masonry wall with an anti-graffiti coating. You can take part of it down for a pool or other work at your house with an encroachment permit from the city, and then it goes back up along with the landscaping.

The ground is the other thing that changes a brick wall here. Yuma is one of the places in Arizona where the dry climate favors expansive soil, clay that swells when wet and shrinks as it dries, and collapsing soil, which can settle once water soaks into it. Either one can crack a wall from below, which is why the footing gets the care I described above, and why I'll talk with you about keeping sprinkler water away from the base. We watch for the same soils on jobs in Fortuna Foothills and Somerton.

Questions about brick walls in Yuma

How much does a brick wall cost in Yuma, AZ?

Across the US, a 220-square-foot brick wall usually costs about $13,000 to $18,500 for the job, before sales tax and fees. That's a national guide for one size of wall, roughly 40 feet long and 5 and a half feet tall, not our price. Your Yuma number comes from the estimate I write after walking your yard.

How tall can a front yard wall be in Yuma?

In Yuma's residential and agricultural districts, a wall inside the required front yard setback can be three feet tall at most. Walls can run along any lot line, so taller privacy walls usually go along the sides and back. When I walk your lot, we'll work out where the wall can go before anything is drawn up.

Does a brick wall need to be painted?

No, clay brick doesn't need paint or any surface treatment, though some owners paint it for looks or to reflect light. Once exterior masonry is painted, it generally needs repainting every three to five years, so leaving the brick bare keeps upkeep low.

How do I choose brick for a garden wall, and can I use salvaged brick?

Pick new brick graded for outdoor walls, and skip salvaged brick unless it meets that grade. Brick industry guidance keeps used brick out of garden walls for that reason, since it's often fired unevenly and generally falls short. If you have a pile you love, I'll look at it with you and tell you what I think.

Can a homeowner in Arizona build their own brick wall without a licensed contractor?

Usually, yes. Arizona's contractor licensing law doesn't require a license for owners building on their own property, alone or with licensed contractors, as long as the work is for their own use and not for sale or rent. The city's permit rules still apply either way.

What causes mortar to fail on a new brick wall in the Yuma heat?

Mortar that dries too fast is the usual cause. High heat and strong sun can pull the water out of fresh mortar before its cement fully cures, and that early drying weakens the bond with the brick. That's why we keep fresh joints from drying out on hot days, and it's a big part of how long a wall lasts.

  • Stone masonry

Natural stone suits a garden seat, a planter or a wall base, and mixing it with brick gives a yard wall a more rugged, varied look.

  • Brick pointing

When the mortar between bricks on an older wall or your house has gone sandy and soft, pointing replaces it before water and wind loosen the bricks themselves.
